West Virginia teen killed, 3 injured in head-on crash

According to law enforcement officials, an 18-year-old man from West Virginia was killed in a head-on collision in Virginia on Oct. 25. On account of the Alleghany County incident, three other people were hurt, two of whom suffered serious injuries, authorities stated.

The 18-year-old man was allegedly speeding north on Virginia State Route 159 in a subcompact car when he lost control. Consequently, the West Virginia man traversed the highway's centerline and collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck driven by a 54-year-old woman, officials reported.

Emergency personnel transported the teenager to LewisGale Hospital Alleghany, where he ultimately died, officials stated. The 54-year-old woman also suffered injuries in the wreck. Emergency personnel transported her to a hospital in Low Moor, reportedly. Two passengers in her truck required aerial transport to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where officials treated them for serious injuries.

Following a deadly traffic accident like this one, multiple forms of legal action may take place. In the event that accident investigators were to determine that one of the drivers was criminally negligent, officials may opt to file criminal charges. Furthermore, accident victims wish to bring a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver, in which case they would have to prove that the driver's negligence was actionable. Families of the deceased accident victims may, in turn, file a wrongful death claim against the negligent driver, seeking financial restitution for the pecuniary and noneconomic damages they suffered due to the fatal crash. While criminal charges would become moot in the event that the at-fault driver perished during the accident, claimants in civil action may carry on their suits against the estate of the negligent driver.
