Authorities seek grand jury indictment following fatal accident

Residents of Lynchburg, Virginia, like to think that other drivers on the road will be courteous and safe. After being involved in an accident, most individuals would stop and attempt to offer aid when possible or wait for authorities. Sometimes, however, individuals are careless or unhelpful, and the resulting incidents can case the loss of life.

One man is headed to grand jury, where authorities are seeking an indictment related to a hit and run. The man allegedly hit a bicyclist in March. The fatal accident involved a 53-year-old biker, who died the following day from his injuries.

According to reports, the 27-year-old driver was in an SUV at the time of the accident. The bicyclist was traveling south on Virginia 122. Authorities say he was not wearing a helmet. The SUV allegedly struck the biker, and witnesses say the 27-year-old driver got out of the vehicle, removed the bike and left the scene.

Later, authorities responded to a call about a pickup truck being on fire. When firefighters arrived, the 27-year-old man was on scene and attempted to stop the firefighters from approaching the vehicle. He also allegedly threw things at the responding vehicles.

Authorities say they saw an SUV that matched the description of the accident while they were on scene with the burning pickup truck. The 27-year-old was arrested for hit and run as well as maliciously throwing objects and public intoxication. The grand jury is scheduled to review the case in August.

The case above seems bizarre, but authorities will work to uncover details and put a narrative together. In the meantime, surviving family of the bicyclist may work to determine whether they'll file a wrongful death suit. Family members of someone injured in such an incident always have the right to pursue a compensation claim if they choose to do so.
