Why paying a speeding ticket isn’t the best solution

On Behalf of | Oct 9, 2025 | Firm News | 0 comments

A speeding ticket is essentially an official allegation that a driver violated traffic statutes. Operating a vehicle at a speed higher than the limit is a violation of the law, albeit a relatively minor one. Most drivers who receive speeding tickets make arrangements to pay them immediately without giving it a second thought.

Many people assume that paying a speeding ticket is the most cost-effective solution. However, paying a ticket may cost a driver more than they think. What additional expenses can a traffic ticket generate?

Tickets can cost drivers their licenses

Virginia tracks the records of each citation that a motorist receives. Drivers who pay the fines for multiple tickets in rapid succession have essentially pleaded guilty to multiple moving violations.

Each ticket can add points to a driver’s record, and they may eventually lose their driver’s license because of their citations. A citation can add three, four or six points to a driver’s record.

Tickets affect insurance

Insurance companies use very complicated procedures to calculate the premiums or policy costs for coverage. The more citations a driver has on their recent record, the more they may end up paying for insurance coverage.

For some people, traffic citations can also have career consequences. They could lose their eligibility for a commercial license. Their employers may not want them driving a fleet vehicle, even if doing so only requires a standard license.

Fighting a ticket instead of paying it can ultimately be a smart decision for a driver. Motorists who have support while responding to pending traffic tickets may potentially avoid scenarios in which they incur extra costs or lose their driving privileges.
