2 ways that music is a driving distraction

Even for a quick trip to the grocery store, you probably listen to music in the car. Many people do. The exact way that they listen has changed over time, from radio to CDs to streaming music on a phone, but music has long been a part of the driving process.

Unfortunately, that does not mean it is safe. Some reports indicate that music can be a significant driving distraction and could actually make car accidents more likely. Below are two ways that this can happen.

Focusing on the music

For one thing, drivers tend to focus on music when they have chosen a song or an artist that they particularly enjoy. Some people listen intently to the words or the melody. Others sing along with the music as they drive. When students in one study were allowed to choose the music that they listened to during the test, they made more driving mistakes than when soft and calming music was selected for them.

Increasing the speed

In fact, calm music often helped people drive better than driving in silence. But with fast or aggressive music, the opposite was true. Drivers tended to speed up along with the tempo of the music they were listening to, which could even lead to reckless or aggressive driving. The music had a psychological impact on them that, in turn, changed the way they operated their vehicle.

Compensation after an accident

Have you been injured in an accident caused by a distracted driver, perhaps because they were listening to music? It is important to know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills and more.
